Located at the heart of the Montparnasse area of Paris, historical core and intellectual life of the capital. The Grande Chaumière is still open to this day.
Before 1914, a small number of migrants move to La Ruche. After 1914, it was a tidal wave, people fleeing insurrestions, persecutions, pogroms, censorship or puritanism.
The Montparnasse area was popular due to the cheap and easy life here and the low cost of accommodation at the time. Artists and Intellectuals gathered in the cafes from dawn to dusk. It was a period of friendship and collaboration between artists.

Owing to the artist friendships and a limited number of models, the group collective lifedrawing started at le Grande Chaumiere. This meant that the models also had better terms and conditions and it became the new norm for artists working together. Many famous artists used the studios: Picasso, Soutine, Mogligiani, Giacometti, Braque, Dali, Degas, Kandinsky and many more .. I have a long list in a brochure.

Today the Académie de la Grande Chaumière is a private art school and workshop. We went to an exhibition there one day, so Dave, my husband was able to take some photos inside. It is possible to book on a pay as you go system for life drawing classes or sign up for a term. There are classes most days of the week - Monday to Friday both morning and afternoons. I was lucky enough to attend 3 afternoon classes there. The poses follow a standard format - 5x5mins, 15 min, 20 min, 40 min, 20 min, 5x2 mins with a break before the long pose. The classes have very good models and are run by the acadamie students. Below are some results of my work at the classes from both a female and a male model.<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYVoSGsevX9RREUFuXDAceDHlS2m2EdQe4FikAKqBjNBXw9mXeu1ZOG-1zJ8sf_jTILhRa8LNPumQy91z_82FyWUx-_hAp6R7kL0Fbgqyl9RXsGeB86LKkCEtnzx9ZnZIzTB0p3gwT7_o/s4640/IMG_20210222_122429089.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" height="320" data-original-height="4640" data-original-width="3472" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYVoSGsevX9RREUFuXDAceDHlS2m2EdQe4FikAKqBjNBXw9mXeu1ZOG-1zJ8sf_jTILhRa8LNPumQy91z_82FyWUx-_hAp6R7kL0Fbgqyl9RXsGeB86LKkCEtnzx9ZnZIzTB0p3gwT7_o/s320/IMG_20210222_122429089.jpg"/></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCOLcg5CYWPadrxD40FPvFwXXaM64sAqXvB6BMHttHYIddFr2am3KpLvP2ZpdrRZqwamJB86DqovjF3kY9EMajWJDchUQqOXP8rBPRjg695zyMEDMtd03XqELURnk2fG03fqhuB-PDy-g/s4640/IMG_20210222_122415036.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" height="320" data-original-height="4640" data-original-width="3472" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCOLcg5CYWPadrxD40FPvFwXXaM64sAqXvB6BMHttHYIddFr2am3KpLvP2ZpdrRZqwamJB86DqovjF3kY9EMajWJDchUQqOXP8rBPRjg695zyMEDMtd03XqELURnk2fG03fqhuB-PDy-g/s320/IMG_20210222_122415036.jpg"/></a></div>

Les Nabis et le Décor at the Musée du Luxembourg and Le Talisman at the Musée D'Orsay. I had never heard about the group before but the exhibitions were fascinating to me. I was particularly fond of the paintings by Vuillard and Bonnard.</p><p></p><div><br /></div>The artists formed a group in 1888 and called themselves "Les Nabis" or the prophets. They were inspired by the artist Gauguin and the late impressionists. It all started with the talisman painting by Paul Serusier, called Le Paysage au Bois d'Amour. It uses bright colours and an almost abstract feel. The group included Bonnard, Vuillard, Maurice Denis, Serusier, Ranson and Valloton. <div><br /></div><div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw_Ft20KPmpgwXperZrQdQMgTlZalJPnw5qb4lyKgzjG_ST2IS3OrLFQkRx6ysnNNidNw3694nNJKH_1RM6qQE7REZ7TBnBTrPpId3nv1o3CK42URuRR6h1IuZ1OQlit6-BAWVJWeedyM/s2048/20190416_112252.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw_Ft20KPmpgwXperZrQdQMgTlZalJPnw5qb4lyKgzjG_ST2IS3OrLFQkRx6ysnNNidNw3694nNJKH_1RM6qQE7REZ7TBnBTrPpId3nv1o3CK42URuRR6h1IuZ1OQlit6-BAWVJWeedyM/s320/20190416_112252.jpg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Vuillard</td></tr></tbody></table>They created joyous and rhythmic works intended to decorate contemporary interiors. There ambition was to create a new art hence the prophets. They were also influenced by Japanese prints, particularly their flat and colourful images. They took themes from association of women with nature, inwardness and spirituality and were driven by the desire to create art available to all.<p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnOlT7EApjSASEVClMgk6mZEHRbTQYF2mB9KH9YTWn0GfS601aKNt1w0EhMGHjqTomPBYkw1HahISdNBwhi0px0PwqzrjKURaLJVV-9zdSoCJxFRF4Q8s3P-bUi_eq45R81gEDffZT2dE/s4640/IMG_20210216_095530465.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3472" data-original-width="4640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnOlT7EApjSASEVClMgk6mZEHRbTQYF2mB9KH9YTWn0GfS601aKNt1w0EhMGHjqTomPBYkw1HahISdNBwhi0px0PwqzrjKURaLJVV-9zdSoCJxFRF4Q8s3P-bUi_eq45R81gEDffZT2dE/s320/IMG_20210216_095530465.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />The interior paintings by Denis, Bonnard and Vuillard were the best I have seen. I was particularly interested in Vuillard who seemed to be commissioned to paint interiors for his clients. He worked on a theme of public gardens to produce one set of paintings including a diptych and triptych. At the Musée D'Orsay there is also an amazing oval painting painted by Vuillard which is shown below. <p></p><p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp9eWIojOg8CKuxs-ME_jV5x1__snxpC-YG93skB1ZcnP2SHhwCcZbzfogbLwBtGGuC9JYAjWprcr_oKMwEBlXxxMUDkW_MGmihH5o0aiixAsdAgodm2C4wfDea0XiRjkmPWl-V5A5VJI/s2048/20190407_103957.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp9eWIojOg8CKuxs-ME_jV5x1__snxpC-YG93skB1ZcnP2SHhwCcZbzfogbLwBtGGuC9JYAjWprcr_oKMwEBlXxxMUDkW_MGmihH5o0aiixAsdAgodm2C4wfDea0XiRjkmPWl-V5A5VJI/s320/20190407_103957.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Oval by Vuillard</td></tr></tbody></table>I made some sketch drawings at the exhibitions. It was difficult as the exhibitions were packed with people and we had a limited time slot. I made a few notes too - the focal points used quite vivid colours, long brush strokes, slightly pointillist in style. Many of the paintings use a limited palette to great effect.</p><div>If you have a chance to see any of these artists I can definitely recommend them. Many of their works are held in private collections but in Paris you can see some at the Musée D'Orsay all year.</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC79lC9ToySYwNFcVe6pFLBPw-Ady8xpttJo0BM4g8hCOOHvmo62NbuOYpteECSXXQO1fGqh3xe-lNvqoYPELz0-Sege8AJ0Xt6S3t9Hr2COrz4FiVFatZxry4IqZ6IycLAdMvkdpes6g/s4640/IMG_20210216_095547178.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4640" data-original-width="3472" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC79lC9ToySYwNFcVe6pFLBPw-Ady8xpttJo0BM4g8hCOOHvmo62NbuOYpteECSXXQO1fGqh3xe-lNvqoYPELz0-Sege8AJ0Xt6S3t9Hr2COrz4FiVFatZxry4IqZ6IycLAdMvkdpes6g/s320/IMG_20210216_095547178.jpg" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><br /></div>Liz Milburnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13656801314787804013noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3156433505679569706.post-27102411931330516722021-02-08T02:13:00.000-08:002021-02-08T02:13:40.798-08:00Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863)<p>During our trip to Paris we visited the studio and national museum for the artist Eugène Delacroix. Prior to our visit I was not familiar with this artist, but I think his history is worthy of note as an accomplished French Artist and having an influence on the impressionists.</p><p>He was born during the Napoleonic reign with his career following waterloo. It was a rebellious and romantic period. Perhaps his most famous painting is "Liberty leading the people" which is housed in the Louvre. The louvre has a number of his larger works which we didn't have time to see (another time). During his life he also produced a number of drawings and lithographs including some of Shakespeare's works.</p><p>He himself was influenced by the artist Ruban's but also by famous writers and musicians. He used expressive brush strokes which were a precursor for the impressionism movement. Both Renoir and Manet were followers of Delacroix and copied some of his works. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3R6Pj9pOkJS79DasFxb-hCiuq1ssukBIXwhsbjaAKpn8ZHABPZlz6Wyeh1LkfcSOnXYG-mTGOpjcrqUfxVl5M6kmUD-p1yWxQJ35OqGVMoenABhau80mHDgncQyY0oezxt1cFeuTBTz4/s4640/IMG_20210208_095025552.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4640" data-original-width="3472" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3R6Pj9pOkJS79DasFxb-hCiuq1ssukBIXwhsbjaAKpn8ZHABPZlz6Wyeh1LkfcSOnXYG-mTGOpjcrqUfxVl5M6kmUD-p1yWxQJ35OqGVMoenABhau80mHDgncQyY0oezxt1cFeuTBTz4/s320/IMG_20210208_095025552.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>In 1847 he moved to 6 rue de Furstenberg, Paris 6eme. He had a studio built in the garden. He moved there as it was within easy walking distance from church of Saint Sulpice where he had a big commission to decorate the church walls. The two paintings of note are "Jacob wrestling the angel" and "St. Michael slaying the dragon". The figures and the surrounding foliage really are striking and very much larger than life yet full of life. I spent quite a while looking at the paintings, unfortunately I didn't have my sketch book that day. They are very impressionistic in style.<p></p><p>Delacroix worked in his studio until his death in 1863. He had a house keeper, Jenny, who guarded his privacy. The studio and apartment now houses the Musée national for Delacroix. The studio and garden are beautiful although I wish they had left the studio as one might have found it rather than an exhibition space. The big studio window is amazing and provided a good quantity of light for his work. </p><p>I found a quote of interest about him .."Eugène Delacroix was a curious mixture of scepticism, politeness, dandyism, willpower, cleverness, despotism and finally a kind of special goodness and tenderness that always accompanies genius".<br /></p><p><br /></p>Liz Milburnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13656801314787804013noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3156433505679569706.post-42369232226178459392021-02-04T03:12:00.001-08:002021-02-04T03:52:22.584-08:00Rodin, at the heart of sculpture<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div><div>I first discovered Rodin's sculptures many years ago on a visit to Paris in the Musee D'Orsay. It now houses some of his amazing collection.</p><p>He learnt sculpture initially in a very traditional way, his early works were very precise but lacked character . He also studied the work of famous sculpturers he admired and in particular observed the very best of Roman sculpture. He realised that quality was important and also strict observation of the subject. He experimented by paring things back and was able to make a move forward with his sculpture from that point. He always tried to capture emotion and character in his figures. The shape, movement and form were everything to him. I love the way that he also seemed to be in tune with the material he used such as stone or bronze. One can feel the process of a figure being modelled from the stone.</p><p><br /></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3qiagE6_mOPwSC6fWzaOM6g9XG3_-BOIeeysF5K_dTJl0rVFnP2cHFaDzibRPi6v_fcsJZ70ALLYif0EiasFeAYWbdO0ZTtWF3ds1xZDaE4WNrfcNPyPyZncvB0FeIUqEkh3J0s8FrAs/s4640/IMG_20210204_102639593.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4640" data-original-width="3472" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3qiagE6_mOPwSC6fWzaOM6g9XG3_-BOIeeysF5K_dTJl0rVFnP2cHFaDzibRPi6v_fcsJZ70ALLYif0EiasFeAYWbdO0ZTtWF3ds1xZDaE4WNrfcNPyPyZncvB0FeIUqEkh3J0s8FrAs/s320/IMG_20210204_102639593.jpg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">"L'homme qui marche"</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p><br /></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSVVCMicCWClaRUiU0uXVJTzCKNPfKxae5MLzj3rF2PEkMNCs5QTCBILrmAaFnkSwPR82va60RD52UmaQsEHrTcHu0u5LjJyc4T6BeIfJjfjyzYkvq8dfXJy_iN3Roz14pL6wgc_txVhU/s4640/IMG_20210204_102628543.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4640" data-original-width="3472" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSVVCMicCWClaRUiU0uXVJTzCKNPfKxae5MLzj3rF2PEkMNCs5QTCBILrmAaFnkSwPR82va60RD52UmaQsEHrTcHu0u5LjJyc4T6BeIfJjfjyzYkvq8dfXJy_iN3Roz14pL6wgc_txVhU/s320/IMG_20210204_102628543.jpg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Draped torso</td></tr></tbody></table><p><br />I tried to make a few sketches of his work but I think I was rather in awe so they haven't turned out as well as I would have liked. It is a haven from the hustle and bustle of city life. The garden was designed for the Palais du Luxembourg and is now owned by the French state and most importantly is open to all.</p><p>It has the most delightful round pond where children's sailboats can be sailed across it. Each boat has a sail representing a different country.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL0rffuYt0SYKv23T8qGRaRFo8RjPMSWpilVkat0QMN3L93jL9gTdGBk4UOxOGxjPSByZWa2VQgIii3oG3KGfW6UD0KcL6JHHmLwC5kKMCWxRMt_fxGmotpK3buATeuUgvDv38RM12FhQ/s2048/Boating+lake.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1969" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL0rffuYt0SYKv23T8qGRaRFo8RjPMSWpilVkat0QMN3L93jL9gTdGBk4UOxOGxjPSByZWa2VQgIii3oG3KGfW6UD0KcL6JHHmLwC5kKMCWxRMt_fxGmotpK3buATeuUgvDv38RM12FhQ/s320/Boating+lake.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p>Many of our trips around Paris involved a walk through the gardens on the way to visit somewhere or the way back. Sometimes we would take a picnic and a book to read just to escape the city. There are many statues in the garden and lots of immaculately planted flower beds. And most importantly lots of chairs to sit on. Bless the French for thinking of the essentials especially as many of the lawns cannot be walked on. People go to the gardens to meet their friends, eat their lunch or just sit and contemplate life. </p><p><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVvh-5ycBsOWegnmzfG99cGG5fRSJ47TvvG3xaDvhYAeK_nCOqOWz6sSWUKcwImgFnTvt790SlKZ645zfLBhY8x5rlRPVApJJ4sSopGkt17tbd1uw9LZoPnrnobU0-a85eNYdVp_vQs1Q/s2048/Boole+2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2007" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVvh-5ycBsOWegnmzfG99cGG5fRSJ47TvvG3xaDvhYAeK_nCOqOWz6sSWUKcwImgFnTvt790SlKZ645zfLBhY8x5rlRPVApJJ4sSopGkt17tbd1uw9LZoPnrnobU0-a85eNYdVp_vQs1Q/s320/Boole+2.jpg" /></a></div><p>Of course no French park could be without p<span face="sans-serif" style="background-color: #514646; font-size: 14px;">é</span>tanque areas. I believe there were 4 linked together and a clubhouse. I love to watch the game, the strategies and the various talents of the players. And I'm not the only one as there is usually a crowd watching. We booked a month at an AirBNB in the 13th Arrondissement near to the Montparnasse tower. The objective of the trip was to learn more about Paris than you would on a holiday and really get a flavour for life in Paris. Key to this was visiting exhibitions and museums particularly with an art theme. We also wanted to take in the parks, the markets and the cafes and restaurants. Bizarrely we also visited the cemeteries especially as we lived near to one! <div><br /></div><div>It was not a trip without drama. In the first ten days we visited the Notre-Dame Cathedral. It has always been a special place for me .. a must see on any trip to Paris. This time we spent longer and were able to see more of the graves, friezes, paintings and artefacts. It was a shock that we heard news on TV just two days later seeing the Cathedral in flames. We watched on TV as the spire toppled and the drama unfolded. It was shocking and unbelievable .. luckily the building was only partially destroyed. The next day was surreal as there was a definite feeling of shock in Paris. People were very subdued.</div><div><br /></div><p style="text-align: left;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcKRfPRIlHpc3gVZVfheFGgHYW6l18yjqOW9IRHbIJFeBv2EA8CSL43m-Hkr7MXCWpQQQx3SnBWnV5FVYfWzTy9NoAbydSM1Vf9hI62GWIOgwATsDgme6E8VBwsQWlSoyl40N-sykBEVU/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1134" data-original-width="1512" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcKRfPRIlHpc3gVZVfheFGgHYW6l18yjqOW9IRHbIJFeBv2EA8CSL43m-Hkr7MXCWpQQQx3SnBWnV5FVYfWzTy9NoAbydSM1Vf9hI62GWIOgwATsDgme6E8VBwsQWlSoyl40N-sykBEVU/" width="320" /></a></div><p style="text-align: left;"><br /></p>It is difficult to know where to start! But it makes sense to start with Monet and the water lilies a definite must see in Paris in the Musee de l'Orangerie. The sheer scale of the works should not fail to impress whatever the weather. The paintings are housed in two oval rooms. The Monet water lilies "contemplate an image of nature evoking infinity. Nerves strained by work would relax in its presence." The Key to the works is no horizon, they are illuminated by the real sky above, the more you look the more you see or don't see. If you sit and look you will feel pure calm. <p></p><p style="text-align: left;">We visited twice on our trip and neither time were disappointed despite the crowds. On return from Paris I made this pastel inspired picture as a card.</p><p style="text-align: left;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMKCA-vwGgiHpmUsPbUdh8W8ZCJO-08Vf9xe5EEy0CqVlWVdnqvYsIG78sJRa-Gh8H1OHX9QtM4mvG3kX-lr5vy2UomI4iELzM1p-6pBHvhSyxSxd3XULVfmR-t4BDAB9tih-KCPrbzk0/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1934" data-original-width="1450" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMKCA-vwGgiHpmUsPbUdh8W8ZCJO-08Vf9xe5EEy0CqVlWVdnqvYsIG78sJRa-Gh8H1OHX9QtM4mvG3kX-lr5vy2UomI4iELzM1p-6pBHvhSyxSxd3XULVfmR-t4BDAB9tih-KCPrbzk0/" width="180" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p style="text-align: left;"><br /></p><div><br /><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /><br /></div>Liz Milburnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13656801314787804013noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3156433505679569706.post-14946270537309817642020-05-12T05:17:00.000-07:002020-05-12T05:17:09.095-07:00Cormorant cardsAs a way of getting back into my art I have started to do small drawings which I can make into cards.<br />

On this hike we walked from the north beach at Piha to Anawhata beach and back.<br />
<br />
Piha is a beach on the west coast of The North Island about an hour from Auckland. It is particularly known for its amazing surf. The backdrop to the beach is sub tropical temperate rainforest of the Waitakere range. The beach has a large rock part way along the beach known as lion rock for obvious reasons. The name Te Piha comes from the Maori meaning divided ripple at the bow of the canoe which the waves breaking around the rock are likened to. Piha is a destination for beach and surf lovers. The sand here is black due to the volcanic nature of the rocks and it has a high iron content.<br />

On the beach we saw three pied shag (or cormorants) which Hazel regularly sees here. Apparently it is common to see them but they are endangered. They are very majestic birds with long necks and white feathers on the throat and under belly. The eyes are blue and there is a yellow spot in front of the eye which is very distinctive. They are very elegant in the way they walk and also in the way they hold their wings out to dry.<br />

The gannet colony is at Otakamiro point, Muriwai, on the west coast of The North Island. The Maori name for them is Takapu pronounced tah-kah-pooh. Every year the Gannets arrive here to breed and raise a chick. Each pair has a single egg which hopefully hatches into a fluffy white chick. We were lucky enough to visit in February when there were a range of chicks from the white fluffy to those malting and almost ready to leave the nest. The coastline is very fragile here and tourists must stick to the paths and board walks provided. The scenery is stunning and being able to get so close to the birds is a real privilege.<br />

What I cannot do is give you a sense of the smell but if you can imagine a lot of sardines just eaten then that would be about right!<br />
<br />
The adult birds are quite large and make a rather risky nose dive to land somewhere near the chick. Often they are then pecked at as they try to get to feed their chick. You will notice that the scrapes/nests are around a pecking distance apart!<br />

These birds have a personality of there own. In the forest they seem to find you and when they do, they flit around sort of leading you on. They don't sit still for very long so my pictures are done from photos we took. I just love them as they appear to be talking to each other, cheeping, we often saw them in pairs.<br />

We saw the New Zealand fantail on many of our walks and even in the garden. Their Maori name is Piwakawaka which I also quite like.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4pnhm_ca8Kod6j_-_TCiFn98ffDKb0fpfMK1bj2v2YGmvo79PUaS5OyCFN2Zk6_nTf5-NG885LQjTPV_EmiqYFowp9ICiTa61CFblNufWD2MEQps-YkrVtyvN8RFVhxKAuBzkJi2-3Ww/s1600/1110623.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1470" data-original-width="1600" height="294" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4pnhm_ca8Kod6j_-_TCiFn98ffDKb0fpfMK1bj2v2YGmvo79PUaS5OyCFN2Zk6_nTf5-NG885LQjTPV_EmiqYFowp9ICiTa61CFblNufWD2MEQps-YkrVtyvN8RFVhxKAuBzkJi2-3Ww/s320/1110623.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div>
They are similar to our British tit family in size but they have a fantail. The breast colour varies from a russet brown to a sooty black. The tails are flickering silver and black with the centre feather quite often black although we did see both pure black fantails and pure while fantails. The two distinct types are the common pied fantail and the black fantail (less common 4%). The common fantail has distinct flashes of white, over the eyes, under the beak and on the wings. They use their fantails for flight, feeding and display. They can use the fantail to sweep across foliage and dislodge insects which they eat. We noticed that they were often seen in pairs.. They tend to flit from perch to perch and they are quite agile in flight twisting and turning. They are quite difficult to photograph as a result.</div>

We saw black fantails on the Kepler track between the control tower to rainbow reach. The majority of the time we saw the common fantails.<br />

I had a good nights sleep and feel quite rested. The world outside here was calm and relaxed. The noise was low and there wasn't too much light last night.<br />
<br />
I have been for a walk in our local park called Heron Park named after the white-faced Heron. It is a lovely park with lots of paths, some in the open and some through the trees. I have noticed that the white faced Heron is smaller than our UK Heron and has yellow legs. I will be doing a bit of research to find out more while in level 4 lockdown.<br />
<br />
I met and talked to two people on my walk at 2m away. One was from American Samoa called Martin. He was tending to the garden of a house. He had a lovely smile on his face, he said he enjoyed the outdoors. It was difficult for me to understand him but we both agreed that it was lovely to be in the outdoors and say how much we loved it. The second person or people was a mother and her daughter. She was speaking French so I said Bonjour. That started a conversation in French, gosh it all flooded back .. I love the language. I have never been that good at it but it was lovely to renew and practice. The lady said she and her husband had been living here in New Zealand for 9 years. I spoke to the daughter in English I asked her her name and she game the name of a character in Frozen, Elsa. Her mother tried to get her to give her real name.<br />
<br />
I took some photos in the park. A tree with crocheted flowers around it. And one with crocheted squares. I photographed the tree which stands as an interesting sculpture. I also photographed a pine tree with lots of sparrows.Liz Milburnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13656801314787804013noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3156433505679569706.post-89114124248500074032020-03-30T01:39:00.000-07:002020-03-30T13:22:35.036-07:00On the other side of the world!Today is the 30th March 2020. A week ago I had a text from my friend Hazel while on holiday to tell us that New Zealand was going into level 4 lockdown in 2 days. We needed to decide what to do .. holiday over .. go home? No flights. Return to Auckland and be locked down with them. We were so grateful for her offer, at least we had a friend who could help us.<br />
<br />
It has been surreal hearing all the news. Is it really happening and I feel like I'm upside down? Especially as we contact loved ones at home at the beginning and end of our day .. rather strange.<br />
<br />
I finally feel like I am listening .. the road messages are clear ... Stay calm, be kind.<br />
<br />
I read this message in the park today - not sure if it's Maori text?<br />
"That this incoming tide is not the breaking of waves upon the reef, but the rising tide of humankind reaching for this distant horizon, carried ashore upon hopes and aspirations.<br />
Welcome to the pillow on which rests the dreams of those who came before you""<br />
<br />
I also overheard a Maori man say "it's time everyone slowed down".<br />
<br />
Feeling so lucky to be here.<br />

My son Thomas is a keen cross country and marathon runner so I have done quite a few paintings on that theme. My aim is to try to capture the style of the runner and the feeling of motion.<br />
<br />
My spirit runners for the Olympics in 2012 were popular<br />

<br />
This term I have pre prepared my paper for life drawing classes. I have either used gesso only and a large brush to accentuate the brush strokes or stuck newspaper into the wet gesso to get a reverse print. <br />
<br />
I have picked out a few of my favourite life drawings, <br />

I try to capture the feel and character of the flower. I like to buy flowers for the table if I don't have any in the garden to pick. At this time of the year I mainly buy tulips and roses.<br />
<br />
I love it when the light hits the flowers and makes the petals and leaves really shine. I try to capture this in my paintings. I usually start by making sketches of the flowers in pencil, charcoal or pastel. I really look and try to capture what I see and the character of each flower. For instance if the flower is standing up or bowed down. I look at the length and position of the petals. I treat them rather as I would people by looking at their proportions.<br />
<br />
Below is a sketch I have done in charocoal<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeCi9tg9vVU9Jw028mlP9A84Pxno55JZROFhlzZfpqiqUnaxI2L0ji-Cja5XyVrPoDGJaGg7biwE05AMioIa1NeXwoj6sLharhuwCLLAUn3G5Q7XYakBMjrzMxKSzlaTVLn31ZeZGZuRs/s1600/Flowers+in+a+vase%252C+charcoal.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1355" data-original-width="1047" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeCi9tg9vVU9Jw028mlP9A84Pxno55JZROFhlzZfpqiqUnaxI2L0ji-Cja5XyVrPoDGJaGg7biwE05AMioIa1NeXwoj6sLharhuwCLLAUn3G5Q7XYakBMjrzMxKSzlaTVLn31ZeZGZuRs/s400/Flowers+in+a+vase%252C+charcoal.JPG" width="307" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Flowers in a vase, sketch</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
It is useful to have the sketch as a reminder when panting the flowers. Here is the final painting.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQFje2cFjeAR3rxKbSbBZ5CPbgzCDsfQDufJp2P6Zzgsh_qD9x-J8XkAiHIrap9MW_mkDIss_j3ahuaRalnelL9u6JDNfORgXRycHu9qQnYPLjCr_i2IuSPFkoaYDn-6Fkj_Edixt81xM/s1600/IMG_1781.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1180" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQFje2cFjeAR3rxKbSbBZ5CPbgzCDsfQDufJp2P6Zzgsh_qD9x-J8XkAiHIrap9MW_mkDIss_j3ahuaRalnelL9u6JDNfORgXRycHu9qQnYPLjCr_i2IuSPFkoaYDn-6Fkj_Edixt81xM/s640/IMG_1781.JPG" width="468" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I often do little sketch paintings of my flowers to make personal cards. The following sketches were made of the spring helebores in my garden. I use cards which have a rectangular aperture which allows me to stick these original sketchs in. For these sketches I used paper I had prepared for the first two and brown paper on the last one.<br />

It was great to see the images of Rome in the TV program "Rome Unpacked". It features so many images of Rome, you can see the presenters going around on a Vespa. You can actually see the Trevi fountain and then you learn it was filmed very early in the morning (5am)!<br />
<br />
Even so it brought back some amazing memories of the buildings, old town roads and piazzas. I especially enjoyed going to see many of the amazing paintings in the basilicas and also an exhibition of paintings by Caravagio.<br />
<br />
I particularly liked the piazzas especially those with cafes where you could linger, enjoy the ambiance, the sun and people watch! Here are a couple of my favourites:-<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWkCJTRrSTn5d4AqfuZejyOtyxMsKBNdWwhnMxTK4_evIvDMHiO0E9v4FQH5BpXrqy4dspK8ycWXu3w1m_Gnyphj77Sfpo04and1BnFulRI1N3tt6S0NpmzW2q1GGVcxYNUoFzST8oTCw/s1600/Cafe+in+the+sunlight%252C+Rome.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1592" data-original-width="1600" height="318" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWkCJTRrSTn5d4AqfuZejyOtyxMsKBNdWwhnMxTK4_evIvDMHiO0E9v4FQH5BpXrqy4dspK8ycWXu3w1m_Gnyphj77Sfpo04and1BnFulRI1N3tt6S0NpmzW2q1GGVcxYNUoFzST8oTCw/s320/Cafe+in+the+sunlight%252C+Rome.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Café in the sunlight</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
This painting is of a café in Piazza di Pietra. What you cannot see are the amazing columns of the temple of Hadrian to the left. I was more interested in the low light on the building and the people. <br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAVp7Xk3d4ok-mJ9eWYIWYk3hLnjAa9b5kSkR1L6zAaEeOsOcERrlKdDrBxsF2dW3KkN0H6PTFYgxkRYioOEwZGzFfUP6LByj82oj8cvHPbTcPME17ywqiLZw6k6MxXZ1C5gUvFP2I3Ig/s1600/Cafe+by+the+Pantheon.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1594" data-original-width="1600" height="318" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAVp7Xk3d4ok-mJ9eWYIWYk3hLnjAa9b5kSkR1L6zAaEeOsOcERrlKdDrBxsF2dW3KkN0H6PTFYgxkRYioOEwZGzFfUP6LByj82oj8cvHPbTcPME17ywqiLZw6k6MxXZ1C5gUvFP2I3Ig/s320/Cafe+by+the+Pantheon.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Café by the Pantheon</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
This is a painting of a cafe in Piazza della Rotonda with the Pantheon in the background. It is an amazing building with its unsupported dome and oculus (hole in the middle) the only source of natural light. This café was great to just watch the world go by. It was one of my favourite places in Rome although quite busy most of the time.<br />
<br />
You can see these and more of my Rome collection at www.littlevangogh.co.uk. I am looking forward to seeing the second part of "Rome Unpacked".Liz Milburnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13656801314787804013noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3156433505679569706.post-56273782756523184742017-11-06T09:01:00.000-08:002017-11-06T09:01:15.633-08:00The Three GracesThis summer I went to see the Raphael exhibition "The drawings". It was amazing and not just drawings in the inanimate sense but drawings full of life and vigour. You could sense the emotions and you felt they could have been drawn recently. One of my favourites was of the three graces. It is a tonal study and reminded me of how difficult it is to do a drawing with three figures. This sometimes happens when we have short 2 or 5 minute poses to put on one sheet. Many times it doesn't work and the figures don't look connected in any way. So when it does work, I feel very happy with my drawing and this one below was one of those times. It is on prepared paper, just painted with a big brush beforehand, and then using charcoal and a putty rubber to highlight at the time. I work quickly and try to capture the feeling especially how they are balanced. <br />

I
have been an admirer of his paintings for a while particularly those of
Bath. Something which he did for the exhibition was to provide an audio
of some of them, giving a bit more information about the paintings which
I thought really added to the exhibition and brought the paintings to
life.<br />

<br />
I thought it might be interesting to write something about my own paintings so here goes. This painting is called "People watching, Rome". It started out life from sketches made outside the Pantheon in Rome. There are a number of cafés around the square and I sat down in one to sketch the comings and goings. What started to catch my imagination was the way that the colours of the canopies seemed to lift the scene with the people, waiter and waitress. Part of it is in bright sunlight which really shone on this particular day. I was lucky that the café was not too busy and the waitress was happy for me to sit around for an hour or two. The sketches in pencil and watercolour help to give me a feel for the atmosphere. When I paint in the studio I try to recreate the feeling of being there again which isn't always easy when it is dark and raining! I really loved the buildings around the Pantheon, it is so unexpected in its position. It definitely has an awe and wonder about it which is difficult to describe until you go and see it for yourself. Painting this painting has given me a great deal of pleasure, I hope you enjoy it. <br />

The work can also be viewed and purchased on line at their website www.littlevangogh.co.uk/<br />
<br />
I have included a picture of all the paintings in my living room. I was very pleased with the collection when it was finished. It was sad to see them go as I have been living with them for a while in my studio but it allows me the space to develop new work. If you would like more details then please get in touch.<br />

It has been a while since my last post. Over the last few months I have been working to complete a collection of Rome paintings. I have done some new ones from sketches and photos and also managed to complete some old ones which have been sitting in my studio.<br />
<br />
I am often asked whether a painting is finished. Now that is hard to answer. I usually answer that "it will never be finished" as I am often not completely satisfied! The last month I have been really thinking about that as I ask my family what they think?! Often it is not the technical parts that really matter but whether it feels right. So how do you quantify that! I decided to put together some criteria for myself about finishing a painting:-<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Does it convey the feelings I had at the time?</li>
<li>Does it have a sense of movement, can your eye travel around easily?</li>
<li>Does it give you a sense of being there i.e. could I step into the scene, a sense of reality?</li>
<li>Is there a good level of focus in some areas and not in others?</li>
<li>Do the colours work together in harmony?</li>
<li>Is there anything that is really catching my eye - a line or mark that needs removing? Or is there anything missing?</li>
<li>Do the people feel like they have life, ie not too stiff/rigid?</li>
<li>Can I feel something from or about the painting? eg. a story or wanting to know more</li>
<li>Does it still have an energy about it? ie. not overworked</li>
</ul>
If I can be happy that I have achieved most of the above then perhaps the painting is finished!<br />
<br />
The most important thing is connecting with the painting. That means that every time you paint you know what you are trying to convey. I know my best paintings are painted from how I feel inside but hopefully these criteria will help me do that more often. Here are a couple (below) I think are finished at long last.<br />

We spent a whole afternoon sketching in Antibes .. I had previously visited Antibes many times when we were living in Vence. It was the start of a series of paintings of Antibes culminating in my French Life solo exhibition in Newbury.<br />
<br />
That trip was also the start of my interest in painting Café scenes .. the café culture of France appears to have really caught on now. I have painted many places but I am often drawn by the cafés as they are good places to sit and paint or sketch as I can really observe the people and the places.<br />
<br />
So I was surprised to discover that one of my paintings from that period turned up for auction in Scotland (see below from catalogue .. a bit blurred). So lovely to see it again as it brings back lots of fond memories.<br />

The idea for the cards came from developing a couple of paintings for the 2012 open studios banner project. I experimented quite a bit with different colours and ideas until I arrived at these using the ring colours. The cards have proved to be very popular especially the Olympic spirit rowers and cyclists. <br />
<br />
Since 2012 I have also added the Olympic swimmers card for triathletes.<br />

Spring time makes me think about visiting Venice. It never fails to inspire me. I love the fact that you really feel like you have stepped back in time when you visit. The water everywhere appears to bathe the buildings in wonderful light. These reflections give such a jewel like quality to the place. The late afternoon light is especially magical with the long shadows. But it is possibly still the people that fascinate me most, going about their everyday lives.<br />
<br />
I can see from my sketches that I was particularly fascinated by the Venice gondoliers. I was keen to capture their posture and their techniques with the pole. Here are a collection of my pencil and watercolour sketches:-<br />
